The Christmas cactus produces an out-sized red flower tenuously held at the end of a long chain of green cactus pads. The plant's name comes from its tendency to bloom in December rather than from the obvious color match. The long curled chain of pads can be hypnotizing, like a path of stepping stones that needs to be followed to its gorgeous end.
